Seun Kuti, the renowned Grammy-nominated Afrobeat artist, has boldly expressed his views regarding the Egypt 80 band, an ensemble passed down to him from Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, his late father and Afrobeat pioneer.
During a recent chat with City 105.1 FM, Kuti vocalized his belief that Egypt 80 reigns supreme as Africa’s most successful musical group, underscoring his significant role as the band’s frontman.
He emphasized his fearlessness in sharing his thoughts without inhibition, asserting his immunity to cultural intimidation, noting the apparent disregard his music faces from media outlets and African award bodies.
Kuti proclaimed, “I will continue to voice my opinions fearlessly as I no longer cower in the face of intimidation. What power do you hold over me? Will you cease to air my videos? Isn’t that already the case?
“Despite my Grammy nomination, no African award organization acknowledged my band in any category. Yet, the undeniable reality remains that I, Seun, lead Africa’s most thriving band. With 54 albums already released, the upcoming one will mark our 55th album.
“The band under my auspices represents a cornerstone of African music. Given a deeper recognition of our cultural heritage, this band should rightfully receive national acclaim, ensuring its enduring prominence in the hearts of Africans worldwide. It is imperative for Africans to witness the establishment of such musical institutions. However, such insights are reserved for those well-versed in African proficiency.”
