On Thursday, two decomposed bodies, thought to be victims of the catastrophic flood that hit Mokwa town on May 29, 2025, were found in the Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The flooding led to the submersion of structures and displaced numerous residents due to an intense rainfall.
Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, announced the retrieval of the bodies on Thursday.
He stated, “The bodies were located downstream from the bridge where the floodwaters had flowed, as Wednesday’s heavy rain eroded the sand that had obscured the corpses.”
He elaborated that the bodies were found downstream of the bridge and were severely decomposed, making them unrecognizable, primarily due to the rain on Wednesday which moved along the waterway and removed the covering sand dunes.
The Niger State Government reported that approximately 700 individuals are still unaccounted for, with a confirmed death toll of 207 from the tragedy.
