A tropical depression in the East Sea has strengthened into Typhoon No. 2 with winds between 62-74 km/h and gusts up to 92 km/h. It is now heading towards the northern Gulf of Tonkin, causing heavy rainfall across various areas in Vietnam.

As of the morning of July 21, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that the tropical depression over the Hoang Sa Archipelago had developed into Typhoon No. 2.

At 7 am, the typhoon was centered over the Hoang Sa Archipelago with winds near the center measuring at level 8 (62-74 km/h) and gusts up to level 10. It is moving west-northwest at a speed of 10-15 km/h.

The typhoon is expected to maintain its current path, reaching Hainan Island by 7 am on July 22. Winds near the center will stay at level 8 with gusts up to level 10.

After passing Hainan Island, the typhoon will slow down as it enters the Gulf of Tonkin, gradually weakening to a tropical depression. By July 23, it is expected to be located over the northern Gulf of Tonkin with reduced wind speeds of levels 6-7 and gusts up to level 9.

Over the following 24 hours, the depression will continue northwest at about 10 km/h, further weakening into a low-pressure system. By 7 am on July 24, it will be situated southwest of Guangxi Province (China).

Typhoon No. 2 will bring strong winds of levels 6-7 to the western regions of the North and Central East Sea, as well as from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai provinces. Winds near the center may reach level 8 with gusts up to level 10, creating rough seas and waves up to 2-4 meters high, increasing to 5 meters near the center.

Weather Inland

This afternoon and evening, the Central Highlands and southeastern Vietnam will experience moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy downpours ranging from 20-50 mm, possibly exceeding 100 mm in some areas. Rainfall is expected to taper off from tonight.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are predicted for the Central Central region today and tonight, with isolated heavy rain of 20-40 mm, and potential over 80 mm in some areas.

The northwestern, north-central, and southwestern regions will also encounter scattered showers and thunderstorms, with possible heavy rain of 15-30 mm, potentially more than 70 mm in some areas.

The meteorological agency has issued warnings for flash floods, landslides in mountainous regions, and flooding in low-lying and urban areas. There is a risk of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds during thunderstorms.
