An unfortunate incident took place in Zango City on the outskirts of Lokoja, Kogi State, where gunmen attacked a mining site, resulting in the death of five security officers and the abduction of two Chinese nationals on Monday, July 22.
The assailants, numbering around 20, raided the mining site and killed five individuals, including three vigilante members and two mining site employees, before taking the Chinese citizens captive.
Reports from locals indicate that the distressing attack occurred around 5 pm and lasted for approximately 45 minutes, with the gunmen commencing the assault by indiscriminately firing gunshots into the air.
“Initially, we were caught off guard by the loud gunshots, forcing many of us to evacuate the area out of fear. This incident is deeply concerning and alarming for the state capital. We appeal to the government to enhance security measures in the state,” a witness expressed.
As of now, the state police command has not issued any statements regarding the tragic incident.
