Parents Demand Release of Detained Protesters in Kano

Angry parents of the young people arrested during the #EndBadGovernance protests have gathered at the Kano State House of Assembly, calling for the immediate release of their children.

Spokesperson for the parents, Mallam Nura Ahmad, reported that around 70 young protesters had been detained and sent to Abuja, where they are believed to be experiencing harsh conditions.

The protests, held from August 1 to August 10 throughout Nigeria, expressed widespread discontent over economic difficulties and the living conditions under President Bola Tinubu’s governance.

Ahmad highlighted the dire treatment of the detainees, mentioning that they lack basic hygiene facilities and are only being provided one meal per day.

The parents have faced significant hurdles in their attempts to bail out their children, leading to their growing frustration and urgency for a solution.

A critical issue raised by the parents is the absence of legal assistance for the detained youths.

Fatima Yusuf Umar, a concerned mother, shared distressing details from her son’s account during their last communication, revealing that he is having difficulty seeing due to mistreatment.

In response to the parents’ plight, the Majority Leader of the Kano State Assembly promised to work towards facilitating bail for the detainees. He also called on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to intervene, advocating for the detainees’ rights and the swift granting of bail.
