Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Rape of Elderly Woman
A 31-year-old man named Olaleye Jimoh has received a 20-year prison sentence from the Ado Ekiti Division of the Ekiti State High Court for the sexual assault of a 50-year-old woman.
He faced charges on July 5, 2022, before Judge Adeniyi Familoni, with one count of rape.
The incident occurred on January 22, 2021, where it was alleged that Jimoh assaulted the woman, violating the Gender-Based Violence (Prohibition) Law No. 18 of 2019.
The victim reported to authorities that she lost consciousness after interacting with an unidentified substance that belonged to Jimoh.
“While I was visiting a colleague in Odo Owa Ekiti, I encountered the defendant on my way home,” she detailed. “He offered to help me as a neighbor. But at one point, he stopped to get something from a nearby primary school and asked me to hold onto an item, which caused me to pass out immediately.”
“I later woke up in the bushes and realized I had been assaulted.”
The prosecution, led by Funmi Bello, presented two witnesses along with incriminating statements from the defendant and a piece of torn clothing as evidence.
In his defense, through attorney Adunni Olanipekun, Jimoh denied the accusations and brought forward three witnesses to testify on his behalf.
During the ruling delivered on Friday, Judge Familoni stated, “I find that the prosecution has established the charge of rape against the victim beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the defendant’s conviction as charged.
“As a result, Olaleye Jimoh is sentenced to 20 years in prison without the option of bail.
“This sentence will be effective from the date he was taken into custody.”
