Baywatch Icon Michael Newman Passes Away at 68

Michael Newman cause of death: Baywatch star dies at 68

Michael Newman, recognized for his portrayal of lifeguard “Newmie” on the beloved show Baywatch, has passed away at 67. After a prolonged struggle with Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2006, Newman died on Sunday, October 20, surrounded by his family and friends.

Matt Felker, a close friend and director of the recent Hulu documentary After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, revealed that Newman‘s passing was due to heart issues. “I had the chance to see Mike one last time, and he welcomed me with his usual warmth, saying, ‘You’re just in time,'” Felker recounted their final moments.

A Lifeguard On and Off the Screen

Born in Los Angeles, Michael Newman emerged as a key figure in the 1990s, portraying Mike “Newmie” Newman on Baywatch. Unlike his co-stars, Newman was genuinely a lifeguard, providing authenticity to his character over 150 episodes, making him the second-most featured cast member behind David Hasselhoff.

Alongside his work on the series, Newman was a full-time firefighter, balancing his time between the fire station and filming duties. He dedicated 25 years to firefighting before retiring after the show concluded.

Raising Parkinson’s Awareness

After his Parkinson’s diagnosis at age 50, Newman became a strong advocate for awareness and fundraising for a cure. Collaborating with the Michael J. Fox Foundation, he participated in various events to promote understanding of the condition. “This illness has allowed me time to reflect, gaining wisdom,” Newman shared in a PEOPLE interview earlier this year. “It’s challenging, but I value every day I have.”

In the documentary After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, Newman candidly discussed his daily battles with Parkinson’s, mentioning he took 10 medications daily and experienced persistent tremors. However, he remained optimistic, cherishing family and simple pleasures.

A Legacy Built on Strength and Family

Newman is survived by his beloved wife, Sarah, with whom he shared 36 years of marriage, along with their two children, Chris and Emily, and their granddaughter, Charlie. Before his diagnosis, Newman and Sarah had intended to retire in Hawaii, where they had a home near the premise of Baywatch: Hawaii. “Life is precious, and I didn’t always appreciate that before Parkinson’s,” Newman noted, acknowledging a shift in his outlook.

His role on Baywatch brought sincerity to the lifeguard experience, making him a beloved character among fans. His efforts to raise awareness about Parkinson’s serve as a powerful inspiration, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, resilience, and authenticity.
