Father Seeks Justice After Son’s Death by Police

Joseph Onminyi is fighting for justice following the tragic death of his 19-year-old son, Peter, who he claims was shot by the Benue State Police Command’s Operation Zenda team.

The incident occurred on May 19, 2024, at around 8 PM as the family was gathered for dinner at their home in Welfare Quarters, Makurdi. Mr. Onminyi reported that police officers forcibly entered their home, resulting in his son’s death in front of family members.

According to Mr. Onminyi, he demands that the authorities return Peter’s body for a proper burial in accordance with their cultural traditions.

In an emotional statement, he portrayed his son as a respectful young man who hadn’t done anything to justify such extreme action by law enforcement.

“My name is Mr. Joseph Onminyi, and my son, Peter, was killed in our home on May 19, 2024,” he shared.

“The police did not explain their actions or inform us of any alleged offenses. They just began shooting while Peter was having dinner.”

“They didn’t talk to me or my children about any wrongdoing; they simply invaded our home, opened fire, and even shot at another one of my sons,” he continued.

“After they killed Peter, they removed his body and took away several household items including a refrigerator, gas cooker, and motorcycles, which resembles robbery rather than law enforcement.”

“I still do not know where my son’s body is, and the police have locked us out of our house since the incident in May.”

“My family is forced to stay in an unfinished building, and I urge Nigeria and the global community to help combat police violence against innocent people,” Mr. Onminyi added.

He has filed a case regarding the violation of human rights against the police, yet he believes the authorities are stalling the legal proceedings.

“They have repeatedly failed to appear in court, displaying a belief that they are above the law,” he expressed.

The spokesperson for the Benue State Police, SP Catherine Anene, commented on the situation, suggesting that the police had gone to apprehend a suspect involved in kidnapping and armed robbery.

“I am aware of the circumstances. The police were attempting to arrest a suspect, and during this encounter, there was an exchange of gunfire which led to his death,” she explained.

“While I do not have the specific name, I will ensure to provide further details. This occurred in the Welfare Quarters area of Makurdi.”
