Chidimma Adetshina from Nigeria has secured the position of first runner-up at the 73rd Miss Universe competition, which took place in Mexico.
The exciting finale was held early Sunday at the Arena CDMX in Mexico City, featuring a thrilling contest between Nigeria and Denmark as the finalists eagerly awaited the title announcement.
This year’s event was notably engaging, highlighting the skill, intellect, and grace of women from around the globe.
In an Instagram update, the event organizers remarked on the dramatic tension, stating: “The final two! Nigeria and Denmark, two incredible women, one unforgettable moment.”
Miss Denmark, Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, won the title of Miss Universe 2024, taking over from Nicaragua’s Sheynnis Palacios, who was the reigning titleholder in 2023.
Although she did not take home the crown, Adetshina’s outstanding performance attracted admiration from judges and the audience alike, who appreciated her elegance and charm throughout the event.
It’s important to note that Adetshina’s path to the Miss Universe stage faced several hurdles.
Earlier this year, her decision to withdraw from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition, in which she had reached the finals, generated considerable discussion.
This decision was partly influenced by concerns from some South Africans regarding her eligibility due to her nationality.
However, undaunted, Chidimma Adetshina went on to represent Taraba State, ultimately winning the title of Miss Universe Nigeria, which allowed her to compete internationally.
Her accomplishment also echoes the remarkable achievement of Agbani Darego from Nigeria, who on November 16, 2001, became the first Black African woman to win the Miss World title at just 18 years old.
