Nigerian rapper Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, known as Phyno, has shared insights on his choice to rap in the Igbo language.

Initially, he rapped in English but decided to shift to Igbo to provide something distinct to the global audience.

During an episode of the ‘In My Opinion’ podcast, Phyno discussed how his background shaped his decision to embrace the Igbo language in his music.

He mentioned, “As I grew up, I was influenced by great lyricists like Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, 2Pac, and Biggie, absorbing a lot of Western music. While I initially rapped in English, I eventually realized I needed to carve a niche for myself.”

“When it was time to build my career, I asked myself, ‘What can I offer the world that they don’t already have? Selling English in the UK wouldn’t make sense, as they own that language. But bringing Igbo to America is different and unique. It’s all about offering something that sets you apart.’

“Growing up in a neighborhood rich in highlife music, I blend all these influences into my work. Recently, I’ve started wearing traditional Igbo clothing to showcase and represent my culture.”
