The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has announced the immediate suspension of all Market Unions and Associations within the state.

This announcement was made via a statement on Wednesday by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

Furthermore, the Governor has instructed law enforcement and security agencies in the state to swiftly apprehend any leaders of the suspended Unions and Associations who fail to comply.

This decision was communicated in a notice from the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, dated November 19, 2024.

Governor Okpebholo cited alarming activities by market Unions as the reason for this action.

Reports indicate that these Unions often block farmers from selling their products directly to consumers at markets and arbitrarily set prices for essential food items, adversely impacting low-income residents in the state.

In the statement, it was noted: “The State Government has received information regarding troubling conduct by market Unions. There are claims that these Unions either prevent farmers from selling directly in markets or unjustly set prices for staple foods, to the detriment of low-income households and the general populace.

“Such actions have led to a significant increase in food prices, making it difficult for the average Edo citizen to afford basic necessities.

“The Edo State Government views this predicament with grave concern, labeling it as extortionist behavior that must not be permitted.

“While the Government acknowledges the contribution of market traders to the economy, this cannot condone allowing a select few, masquerading as Union leaders, to exploit the entire population for their personal gain.

“Consequently, Governor Monday Okpebholo has mandated the suspension of all Market Unions in Edo State, effective immediately.

“Law enforcement has been alerted, and any individuals or groups that disregard this order will be held accountable.”
