On September 3, 2024, the President submitted four tax reform proposals to the National Assembly, as advised by the Taiwo Oyedele-led committee on tax reforms.

The House of Representatives is currently engaged in a private session to deliberate on the Tax Reform Bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu.

Earlier, the President submitted four key bills to the National Assembly, which emerged from recommendations by the tax reform committee led by Taiwo Oyedele.

Among these proposals is the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, which aims to outline the country’s taxation framework. Another is the Tax Administration Bill, designed to establish a clear legal framework for taxation and minimize disputes.

The Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill is also included, intended to replace the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act with a new Nigeria Revenue Service. Lastly, the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill aims to set up a tax tribunal and appoint a tax ombudsman.

A member of the All Progressives Congress, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned that the closed-door session is aimed at alleviating concerns prior to the upcoming debate.

“Some members are still uncertain about the proposed bills, but there is a general sentiment that the government’s intent serves the economic interests. This meeting seeks to rally support for the legislation,”
he noted.
