Businesswoman Highlights Lawyer Concerns in Property Ownership
Engr. Roberta Edu, a businesswoman, revealed that her husband sought legal assistance for purchasing a house in Lekki. However, the lawyer tried to convince him to not list her as a co-owner.
She noted that the lawyer suggested her husband take time to reconsider while presenting reasons against including her name.
During another property purchase, the same situation arose. Despite both partners contributing funds, the new lawyer also discouraged adding Roberta’s name as a co-owner.
Even when her husband expressed that they both financially supported the purchase, the lawyer insisted that he should only include his name. The lawyer argued that since Roberta wasn’t part of the legal documentation, it would suffice to tell her that everything he owns is also hers.
Both legal advisors cautioned that adding her name would restrict the husband’s ability to evict her in the event of a divorce.
Roberta has cautioned women to be mindful when investing with their spouses to ensure their contributions are recognized and protected.
