The complex dynamic between Amanda Bynes and her parents can be traced back to when she was a child star. In 2003, Variety reported that Amanda had attempted to seek emancipation from her parents, Rick and Lynn Bynes, which prompted her father to fire her agents and managers. It was later revealed that Amanda had kept her plans hidden from both of her parents, causing them to feel betrayed. Although Amanda eventually withdrew the petition, the tension between her and her parents remained.
In an effort to find comfort, Amanda turned to Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider and his wife, Lisa Lillien. Lillien shared with People that Amanda spent a lot of time with them, but never left her family’s house. A source also revealed to the outlet that Amanda’s parents were very strict and that her father was very controlling.
In 2014, Amanda made serious accusations against her dad on Twitter, alleging verbal and physical abuse as a child. She later retracted her statements, claiming that a microchip in her brain had made her say those things. Her mother responded to the allegations by telling E! News that Rick had been an exemplary father and husband.
