Fashion’s biggest night, the Met Gala 2023, never disappoints. This year’s theme was “in honor of Karl”, in celebration of the life and work of the late design legend Karl Lagerfeld. Guests were encouraged to dress in black and white, Lagerfeld’s preferred color palette, and many paid homage to the designer’s style signatures such as tweeds, pearls, chains and camellias.
Among the best-dressed celebrities on the red carpet were Rihanna, Naomi Campbell and Gisele Bündchen. Michaela Coel’s second-skin Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown was a true work of art, while Naomi Campbell’s pink draped silk gown was from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2010 haute couture collection. Rihanna was blooming beautiful in a camellia-appliquéd cape and matching gown by Valentino, which showcased her baby bump. Janelle Monáe pulled off a theatrical fashion moment with a black-and-white Thom Browne coat and sheer conical wireframe gown atop a black sequined, pearl-studded bikini. Gisele Bündchen stunned in a sheer white dress accented with vertical stripes of sequins and a sweeping feathered cape, both from the Spring/Summer 2007 Chanel Haute Couture show. Nicole Kidman revisited an old favorite look from the Chanel archives, wearing a feathery pink silk tulle dress she wore in her iconic Chanel No. 5 commercial from 2004. Dua Lipa wore a tweed Chanel Haute Couture ballgown from 1992 and was accompanied by a Tiffany & Co. necklace set with an over-100-carat diamond. Phoebe Bridgers’ pearl-dotted Tory Burch gown was spooky yet sophisticated, while Jenna Ortega’s corseted bodice, ruffled skirt and draped chains by Thom Browne was half goth, half glam. Anne Hathaway continued her red carpet hot streak in a slashed-up white tweed gown by Versace held together with gold safety pins and strings of pearls. Bad Bunny had the strongest menswear look of the night with an all-white Jacquemus ensemble including a 26-foot floral train, with a custom printed picture of Casa Mal
