Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have a love story for the ages, but the pair’s decision to never make their union official has often been viewed as unorthodox.
The Academy Award-winning actress, 77, opened up about her relationship with her longtime partner and the reason the pair never said “I do.”
“Why should we be? Isn’t that a better question?” Hawn told CNN’s Chris Wallace.
When Wallace pressed further, Hawn — who has been with Russell, 72, since 1984 — said the pair have each seen the aftermath of an unsuccessful marriage.
“When it doesn’t work out, it ends up to be big business,” explained Hawn, who was previously married to actor Gus Trikonis from 1969 until 1976, and later to musician Bill Hudson from 1976 until 1982.
“It’s always ugly,” she shared. “Somebody actually has to take a look and say, ‘How many divorces actually are fun? How many divorces actually don’t cost money? How many divorces actually make you hate the person more than you did before? How many divorces have hurt children?’”
Wallace then noted that Hawn and Russell have been together for four decades, telling her, “You’re not going to get divorced.”
“How did you know that then?” she responded. “I like the idea that I can wake up in the morning and make decisions every day if I want to be here.”
“I mean relationships are hard,” she went on. “They’re not always easy. There’s all kinds of hurdles we go through. There’s things that we believe in, things we don’t believe in, we agree on.”
“So I think ultimately staying independent with independent thinking is important, so you can hold on to yourself, and you can actually have that feeling,” she added.
