One of the victims was Martin “Tiger” Bech, a former Ivy League football player who displayed immense talent during his three seasons at Princeton before starting a career in finance in New York.
The news of his passing was confirmed by his mother in a statement to ABC News. She shared that Martin had traveled to Louisiana for a brief vacation with his Princeton friends and was set to fly back to New York later that day. Tragically, he was just 27 years old.
Martin’s brother, Jack Bech, expressed his grief on X, writing, “Love you always brother! You inspired me every day now you get to be with me in every moment.” Princeton’s head football coach, Bob Surace, also shared his condolences, highlighting Martin’s competitive spirit and the growth he achieved during his time at Princeton.
Martin Bech’s Tragic Final Moments
Martin’s mother shared with ABC News that her son was fully embracing life before his untimely passing. Reports indicate that Martin was on Bourbon Street around 3 a.m. when a driver rammed a truck into the crowd, resulting in 15 fatalities and dozens of injuries. Local reports from KLFY revealed that he was rushed to the hospital, placed on life support, and sadly passed away later that morning.
A Louisiana native, Martin attended St. Thomas More Catholic High School, earning All-State accolades for his performance on the football field. The school hosted a memorial service honoring him, where the principal remarked on Martin’s unique character and athletic skill. “I don’t think there’s ever been anybody like Tiger,” he said.
Additionally, Martin was not alone during the attack; he was with his best friend and fellow Princeton alum, Ryan Quigley. Both were celebrating the New Year together, and while Quigley was also injured and hospitalized, his current condition remains uncertain, according to Philly Voice.
