A newly filed search warrant by George Harms, a police officer from Bloomington, Minnesota, has brought back attention to the notorious murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman from 1994.
Alleged Confession from O.J. Simpson
In documents submitted to Hennepin County, officials are looking into thumb drives thought to hold a recording of O.J. Simpson confessing to the murders.
This application for a search warrant follows a tip received in June 2024 from the Los Angeles Police Department. They reported that Iroc Avelli, who is facing charges in Minnesota, and his lawyer alerted detectives about this evidence.
It is claimed that a thumb drive taken from Avelli’s backpack during a 2022 search could contain a tape of Simpson admitting to the crimes.
Harms discovered these thumb drives while probing a unrelated assault case in Bloomington.
While the drives have been located, the actual data is still unexamined and awaits forensic analysis.
The warrant suggests that the evidence involved “may indicate that a crime has occurred or show that an individual is responsible for it.”
These new claims add another layer to a decades-long case that captured the nation’s attention. Simpson, an accomplished NFL running back, was infamously pursued by police in 1994 following the murders.
The subsequent trial became known as the “trial of the century,” which concluded with a contentious not guilty verdict in 1995.
Nonetheless, in a civil trial in 1996, Simpson was found responsible for the deaths and ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages.
Simpson passed away from cancer in April 2024 at the age of 76 and never faced prison time for the murders.
After his acquittal, he underwent a significant life change, culminating in a 2008 conviction for armed robbery, which resulted in a nine-year prison sentence.
As investigators delve into the thumb drive claims, the potential unveiling of a murder confession could significantly change one of America’s most infamous criminal stories.
