Barbara Corcoran and her spouse, Bill Higgins, have maintained their marriage for nearly 40 years, showcasing their unique approach to relationships. One noteworthy aspect is their choice to have separate bedrooms, a setup that divides their sleeping quarters instead of fostering traditional closeness.
In a March 2024 episode of “Today with Hoda and Jenna,” Corcoran revealed, “I have been sleeping separately from Bill for about 40 years. Our bedrooms are exclusive; we need invitations to enter each other’s space.” This arrangement originated from their contrasting preferences in cleanliness, as Corcoran felt overwhelmed by Higgins’ untidiness, leading to her lack of restful sleep. When recalling the single invitation he extended to her, she humorously remarked, “I declined. That’s why he hasn’t asked again!”
Despite their separate sleeping habits, the couple enjoys quality time together, often playing Scrabble in a spirited competition over wine before retreating to their own rooms. Corcoran happily stated, “Winning against him is the highlights of my evenings!”
Separate Spaces Foster Happiness for Barbara Corcoran
Beyond the mess, Corcoran credits the separate bedrooms as essential for her well-being. This arrangement grants her the necessary time to unwind, ultimately allowing her to be more amiable with her husband. Given her hectic lifestyle filled with work and social commitments, she revealed on “The Jamie Kern Lima Show” that she requires solitude to recharge. However, her husband adds to her stress with brainstorming sessions before bed, which she finds taxing and indirectly affects her mood. “I become a bit irritable,” she admitted.
Corcoran pointed out that having her own space effectively communicates her need for solitude. “If I move to the living room, he follows. If I head to my bedroom, he keeps his distance,” she shared. Living in a spacious penthouse allows Higgins ample room to enjoy his solitude as well.
While unconventional, this strategy has proven beneficial for the couple. Corcoran has publicly expressed her deep love for her husband, stating on Instagram in November 2024, “What we share is real and enduring. Bill is my foundation, my best friend, and an exceptional father and grandfather. I couldn’t wish for a better life partner.” With such a strong bond, sharing a bedroom seems irrelevant.
