The life of Queen Elizabeth II’s younger sister, Princess Margaret, was brief yet full of color. She was known for her rebellious nature and had a number of affairs, including one rumored to be with Mick Jagger. Her most famous lover was Peter Townsend, whom she was forbidden to marry due to his status as a divorcé. However, another ill-fated affair of hers was with Robin Douglas-Home, a jazz pianist and author who was the cousin of Princess Diana’s father and nephew of Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home.
The affair was kept secret for many years until 1994, when the News of the World published letters that the two had sent each other. It began in 1966 when Margaret was married to Antony Armstrong-Jones, also known as Lord Snowdon, and Douglas-Home was newly divorced. After a passionate romance, Margaret was forced by her husband to break up with her lover. In a heartbreaking goodbye letter, she wrote that she would try to come back to him one day if given a good and safe chance. Sadly, eighteen months later Douglas-Home passed away by suicide at the age of 36.
