Cybercriminals Take Advantage of Tet Season Weaknesses to Breach Bank Accounts

Security Alerts Ahead of Lunar New Year

With the Lunar New Year nearing, the Department of Information Security has issued a caution for everyone to be alert against hackers attempting to exploit security flaws to infiltrate users’ bank accounts.

They highlighted three prevalent scams identified from January 13 to 19 within Vietnam’s digital ecosystem. Authorities stressed the necessity of reporting any suspicious activities to facilitate prompt assistance and resolution.

Rise of Counterfeit Currency Scams

The department has observed a surge in fake money scams on platforms such as Facebook and TikTok.

Scammers lure individuals by promoting attractive offers for counterfeit currency, ultimately leading to financial theft.

A quick search of “fake money” uncovers numerous profiles and groups engaged in these scams.

In many cases, posts showcase counterfeit bills in various denominations, often providing vague contact methods and urging potential victims to message privately for prices.

It is recommended that individuals conduct transactions solely through recognized legal channels and verify identities before making any payments.

Travel Scams During the Tet Holidays

As demand for travel packages rises during the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday, scammers are exploiting this trend with their devious schemes.

Fraudsters set up various social media groups and fan pages to promote “incredible deals” on Tet tour packages using enticing visuals and appealing itineraries. Typically, victims are required to make a full payment or a large deposit upfront before any service is rendered.

To enhance credibility, fake accounts often leave positive feedback or claim satisfaction with these offers. Some scammers even impersonate legitimate travel companies or create fraudulent agencies.

The Department urges individuals to avoid disclosing personal or banking details, steer clear of dubious links, and not download unknown applications. It is crucial to verify travel offers via official sources.

Bank Impersonation Scams

As Tet arrives, banks are warning consumers about scams involving fraudulent impersonations of their employees.

Scammers take advantage of minor transactions not needing biometric verification, allowing them unauthorized access to victims’ accounts. They may also mislead users into downloading fake apps that collect personal information, facilitating significant unauthorized transactions.

Some scammers acquire user data through “dark web” marketplaces or data breaches, then try to access victims’ accounts, intentionally entering wrong passwords to prompt temporary account locks.

Disguising themselves as bank staff, they reach out to victims claiming to help unlock their accounts and may instruct them to download harmful applications or scan QR codes with malware designed to steal sensitive information.

Individuals are advised to confirm any suspicious calls directly with their bank, avoid sharing OTPs or personal details, and activate two-factor authentication for heightened security.

Preventive Tips Against Scams

The Department of Information Security recommends that individuals:

  • Engage in transactions only via official, verified channels.
  • Regularly update and strengthen their passwords.
  • Be cautious of communications from individuals claiming to represent their bank, especially those demanding urgent responses.
  • Refrain from clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading applications from unverified sources.
  • Quickly report any suspected scams to the relevant authorities for prompt action.

The department underscores that staying proactive and vigilant are the best tactics against online fraud, especially during high-risk times like the Lunar New Year.
