Severe Traffic Congestion on Phap Van – Cau Gie Expressway
On the night of February 1, during Tet festivities, the final segment of the Phap Van – Cau Gie Expressway in Hoang Mai District, Hanoi, was overwhelmed with traffic as thousands of vehicles lined up to access the elevated Ring Road 3 towards the city center.
With vehicles barely moving at speeds between 10 to 15 km/h, the traffic jam stretched almost 5 kilometers.
Nguyen Thi Huong, hailing from Thanh Hoa, recounted that her family endured a five-hour drive just to reach the end of the expressway, hampered by the heavy traffic that caused their speed to slow dramatically.
To alleviate the situation, the Highway Patrol Unit No. 3 worked alongside the expressway management to regulate traffic, modifying the opening and closing of interchanges on the elevated Ring Road 3.
At the junction near Do Muoi Street in Hoang Mai District, vehicles continued to queue for long stretches, with similar traffic backups observed on the elevated Ring Road 3 towards Mai Dich.
The on-ramps approaching the elevated road and Do Muoi Street experienced continued congestion late into the night.
At moments, traffic came to a complete halt.
This jam extended through Nghiem Xuan Yem Street towards Khuat Duy Tien.
The Traffic Police Department predicts a further increase in vehicles returning to Hanoi on February 2. In response, they are deploying mobile motorcycle patrols and collaborating with local police to manage the traffic flow and guide residents in selecting alternative travel routes.
