Manh Dung Emerges as a Strong Contender for National Team Role
Nham Manh Dung is positioning himself as a significant player for coach Kim Sang Sik, looking to take over the role previously held by Nguyen Xuan Son in the Vietnam national football team, provided he keeps up his impressive form.
During the 10th round of the LPBank V-League at Thien Truong Stadium, Manh Dung scored the decisive goal that led Viettel FC to a vital 3-point win against Thep Xanh Nam Dinh, lifting the team to third place in the league.
Coming off the bench, he made an impact in the 64th minute, scoring with a well-placed header from a cross by Duc Chien, leaving the opposing goalkeeper, Nguyen Manh, with no chance to save.
The moment echoed his memorable header in the SEA Games 31 final, where he clinched the gold medal for Vietnam’s U23 team by defeating Thailand.
This performance is timely, as coach Kim Sang Sik is on the lookout for a player to fill in for the injured Nguyen Xuan Son.
Manh Dung has consistently excelled, having scored previously to help Viettel achieve a 2-0 win over PVF-CAND, securing their place in the National Cup quarterfinals.
Standing at 1.80 meters tall, he combines a solid physical presence with impressive aerial skills, marking him as a versatile forward. His ability to create opportunities independently makes him a strong candidate for national selection.
Despite his previous success at the SEA Games, he has faced challenges in maintaining a stable position in the senior team due to inconsistent performances. Now, with a series of strong displays, he is eager to take advantage of the opportunity to impress coach Kim Sang Sik.
When compared to Thanh Binh, whose recent performance at the ASEAN Cup did not live up to expectations, Manh Dung demonstrates greater potential. Whether the 25-year-old forward can seamlessly fit into Kim Sang Sik’s tactical approach and playing style remains to be seen.
