Chao long earned a spot as the 7th best dish in a list published on May 15, with Taste Atlas describing it as “a delicious and budget-friendly meal cherished throughout Vietnam.”
“While each region adds its own flair, the dish primarily consists of rice prepared in a savory pork bone broth, paired with various pork offals like liver, kidneys, and heart,” the site explains.
This steaming dish is typically served hot, often alongside crispy fried dough sticks, scallions, and a sprinkle of chili powder. Bean sprouts, lime, fresh herbs, fish sauce, and ginger are usually provided on the side. Diners may also opt to include congealed pig’s blood for added flavor, based on personal taste.

Chao long was previously highlighted by Taste Atlas as one of the top 100 street foods in Southeast Asia.
In addition to chao long, Vietnam boasts three other dishes in the rankings of Asia’s 33 finest porridges: chao thit bo (beef porridge) in 18th place, chao vit (duck porridge) at 22nd, and chao ga (chicken porridge) taking the 25th spot.
Taste Atlas, established in 2015, serves as a global culinary guide, showcasing traditional dishes from all over the globe.
Founder Matija Babić states that the rankings are derived from assessments and critiques by culinary professionals and food enthusiasts, ensuring accuracy and authenticity.
