Trailblazing Vietnamese Firms Shaping the Future of the ICT Landscape

During the 1990s and early 2000s, Vietnam’s telecommunications sector, particularly mobile services, was recognized for its advanced digital technology approaches but remained costly relative to international standards.

At that time, mobile phones were uncommon, priced around 1,000 USD, with connection charges of 200 USD per subscriber and monthly fees near 30 USD. In cities like Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi, local calls were around 0.3 USD per minute.

The landscape shifted dramatically when Viettel entered the telecommunications arena in 2000, introducing the VOiP 178 service, which offered domestic and international long-distance calls at just 55-60% of traditional costs.

By launching mobile services in 2004, Viettel experienced explosive growth, achieving a remarkable year-on-year increase that surpassed the total growth of all prior years combined.

Vietnam came to be recognized as the fastest-growing mobile market globally, thanks to Viettel, which raised the mobile penetration rate from under 5% in 2004 to more than 100% within a short timeframe, turning mobile communications from a luxury to a necessity.

Following its success in transforming Vietnam’s telecom sector, Viettel ventured internationally in 2006, influencing change on a larger scale. Presently, Viettel operates in 10 different countries, serving a market of 270 million people and nearly 100 million customers, holding the leading market position in six of those nations.

Viettel’s achievements have greatly improved access to telecommunications and fueled economic and social growth in these regions.

Moreover, Viettel has led developments in 4G and 5G device production, having successfully tested its 5G network in 2019, placing Vietnam among the top five nations to accomplish this.

With its capabilities in producing 5G terminal equipment, Viettel ranks among the top six telecom firms worldwide for 5G equipment provision, alongside major players like Ericsson, Samsung, and Huawei.

Unique in the global telecom landscape, Viettel operates telecom networks while also handling research and manufacturing of its devices.

Mr. Tao Duc Thang, the CEO of Viettel, highlighted the company’s readiness to partner with other Vietnamese enterprises to innovate cloud computing solutions, aiming to provide secure, flexible, and efficient data storage options for individuals, families, organizations, and businesses.

VNPT historically faced challenges as one of Vietnam’s least developed and most outdated industries, particularly after the separation of government oversight and business in 1975.

However, through visionary leadership and proactive measures, VNPT has transformed itself into a modern, internationally-standardized industry and a vital sector of the national economy.

In December 2003, VNPT’s telephone network achieved 7 million subscribers, hitting a phone density of 8 per 100 people, two years ahead of targets established by the IX Party Congress for 2005.

In April 2008, VNPT launched VINASAT-1, Vietnam’s inaugural telecommunications satellite, making substantial contributions to the country’s infrastructure, enhancing network capabilities, and improving telecom and IT service quality.

Since 2014, VNPT has evolved from a traditional telecom operator to a leading digital service provider, aspiring to be the foremost in digital services within Vietnam, as well as a digital transaction hub for Asia.

The company’s 5G advancements aim to integrate ICT and telecom infrastructures into a unified platform.

As one of the largest telecom and IT corporations in Vietnam, VNPT has collaborated closely with the government to implement digital solutions and platforms for e-government, smart cities, and digital modernization.

Mr. Huynh Quang Liem, the CEO of VNPT, stressed the company’s successful involvement in national projects like the “National Population Database,” which has benefitted over 100 million people across 11,000 communes.

From 1991 to 1993, Europe began adopting the GSM digital mobile technology, albeit in its infancy. Vietnam’s Postal Service, which later became MobiFone, opted for GSM technology for its mobile networks.

On April 16, 1993, MobiFone launched as Vietnam’s first mobile network, collaborating with global telecom leader Comvik/Kinnevik from Sweden for expertise and support in infrastructure, strategy, and corporate culture.

This partnership was among the most effective in Vietnam’s business history, positioning MobiFone as the first mobile operator to serve the public on a commercial basis and establishing it as a significant player in the telecom market.

By 1994, MobiFone had generated substantial revenue and contributed significantly to the state budget, remaining one of the most profitable state-owned telecom firms, consistently achieving over 35% annual returns at peak times.

Recently, MobiFone has shifted toward becoming a digital technology leader, playing a vital role in the digital transformation and economic development of Vietnam.

FPT emerged as Vietnam’s premier IT company in 1998, focusing on building IT infrastructure for essential economic sectors. Instead of resting on its laurels, FPT aimed to expand into software exports.

The company began exploring foreign markets, starting in India and Silicon Valley, and found success in Japan in 2005. FPT has since opened offices in places like Singapore, Europe, and the U.S.

By 2023, FPT attained 1 billion USD in revenue from overseas IT services, positioning itself among global IT service providers. The company is also dedicated to advanced technologies such as AI, automotive, and green transformation, enhancing Vietnam’s standing in the international tech landscape.

Established in 1993 by Ha The Minh and Nguyen Trung Chinh, CMC has focused on ICT as its core strength. Initially making Vietnam’s first branded computers, CMC later branched out into systems integration and software services.

CMC Global was launched in 2017 to offer software and technology services internationally, with a focus on AI technology and aspirations to become a billion-dollar firm by 2028.

Beginning as a small gaming company in 2004, VNG became Vietnam’s first “tech unicorn” by 2014. Today, VNG operates in various sectors including online gaming, finance, cloud computing, and e-commerce, featuring flagship products like Zalo, which boasts 75 million active users.

VNG’s mission to enhance the internet for the benefit of Vietnamese citizens continues to drive its innovations and global ambitions.
