2027 Election: Brace Yourself for a Surge in Campaigns

Vice President Shettima Warns Atiku of Future Exchanges

During a recent symposium in Abuja, Nigeria’s Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, informed Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 2023 presidential candidate, to prepare for more sharp remarks as the 2027 elections approach.

This comment was made while Shettima paid tribute to various dignitaries, including Atiku, at Kayode Fayemi’s 60th birthday celebration.

In a humorous tone, Shettima referred to himself as an “adjunct provocateur,” recalling how he aimed pointed comments at Atiku during the previous election.

Nonetheless, he praised Atiku, acknowledging his reputation as an elder statesman who handled criticism with poise.

Shettima also shared that he affectionately calls Atiku “Baba,” which translates to “father” in Hausa, during their private conversations.

Despite the friendly nickname, Shettima humorously warned Atiku to be ready for more verbal sparring in the future, which drew laughter from the audience, including Atiku who smiled at the banter.

Furthermore, Shettima urged all leaders to unite beyond political differences, advocating for African leaders to develop their own strategies instead of depending on foreign models.

“We face a tragedy where African leaders limit themselves to external plans while failing to break free from a reliance on foreign powers and superficial activism,” Shettima remarked.

“Regardless of our disputes, one undeniable truth remains: we are in an era dominated by technology. We cannot address our development challenges with outdated methods while the rest of the world advances rapidly.”

“Time waits for no one, and we must not lag behind,” he concluded.
