Concerns Over Threats to Life of PDP Councillorship Candidate
Honorable Igwe Akuma Akwu, the PDP’s candidate for councillorship in Okamu Ward, Ohafia, Abia State, voiced serious concerns about his safety following the November 2nd local elections. Akwu alleges that he overwhelmingly won the election, only to have his victory usurped.
According to Akwu, on election day, security personnel stormed his residence early in the morning, leading to violence against his relatives and polling agents.
In a statement issued to Vanguard, Akwu demanded that Abia’s Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, clarify his alleged involvement in this troubling incident. Describing constant fear, Akwu has called for protective measures from security forces.
In response, Deputy Governor Emetu refuted the allegations, accusing Akwu of seeking attention by linking him to the disturbances. Emetu’s Chief Press Secretary, Chukwudi Eke Mba, remarked that Akwu was exaggerating, emphasizing that the PDP is fading in Abia and that the allegations were fabricated.
Akwu, however, remains steadfast, asserting that it is crucial for authorities to look into the matter. He described an alarming situation on election day when unidentified men tried to abduct him, while he narrowly escaped by hiding in a restroom.
In his statement, he asserted his legitimacy as the rightful winner of the councillorship election. Despite the reported attacks and intimidation from the Deputy Governor’s camp, he contended that his community supported him, as confirmed by officials from the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).
The controversy deepened as Akwu expressed concern for his safety and freedom, questioning the Deputy Governor’s motives and insisting on a thorough investigation into the events of that day.
Akwu urged his supporters to stay hopeful amidst the chaos, emphasizing that their voices were heard despite the turmoil.
Additionally, ABSIEC contradicted Akwu’s claims of winning the election, demanding evidence such as result sheets to substantiate his narrative. Their spokesperson, Dr. Kelechi Okere, stated that anyone claiming victory must provide concrete proof.
Attempts to contact the local police for more information were met with challenges. An officer handling the case reported that four individuals were detained from Akwu’s residence but released on bail, with accusations of defamation made by the Deputy Governor regarding their online comments.
As of the latest updates, no finality has been reached, with local police preparing files for potential court proceedings.
