Governor Umo Eno
Governor Umo Eno from Akwa Ibom State has declared a total cash prize of N310 million for youth leaders across the 31 local government areas, recognizing their decision to abstain from participating in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
This announcement was made during a gratitude rally at the Uyo Township Stadium on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
Just before the nationwide protests, which took place from August 1 to 10, the governor had engaged with key community figures, including youth organizations, students, and market representatives, urging them to steer clear of the demonstrations.
At the rally, he specified that each local government would receive N10 million, which was to be fairly distributed among various political parties.
“The youth leaders in every local government area will receive the funds and share them across political divides.”
“We cannot allow you to remain in the circumstances we discovered you in. We are grateful that you listened to our request to not engage in the protests—not because we dismiss the issues at hand.
“We recognize that peaceful protests can sometimes be exploited by certain individuals to damage state property and express frustration.
“Our administrations have dedicated 37 years to building this infrastructure, and a fleeting moment of rage could undo their efforts.
“We proudly acknowledge your choice, and we are here to express our appreciation. Although you did not protest, we have been attentive to your concerns. We are conscious of the issues that trouble you.
“We understand the difficulties posed by hunger, joblessness, and rising food prices. We will strive to address these within the limits of our state resources.”
