On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, Aliyu Madaki, the member-elect of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) representing Dala Federal Constituency of Kano State, was detained by the Kano Police Command. This came after a picture of him brandishing a pump action gun during a homecoming rally for the NNPP presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, went viral online. SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, spokesperson of the command, confirmed the development and stated that Madaki is currently at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) undergoing an investigation.
The incident that led to Madaki’s detainment occurred on February 23, when thugs attacked the motorcade of the NNPP presidential candidate along Zaria Road in Kano. Madaki allegedly led a crackdown against the thugs, resulting in the arrest of the ruling APC chairmen of Ungogo and Rimingado Local Government Areas of Kano State, Abdullahi Ramat and Munir Dahiru respectively with pistols. Police later paraded 85 thugs arrested alongside the chairmen during the clash but set free the local government chairmen without filing charges against them.
