On April 27, ComicBook.com held a virtual watch party of Avengers: Endgame, and the Russo Brothers participated. Fans tweeted questions at the directors, and Joe and Anthony Russo gave insight into the making of the film. After one fan’s question, the directors revealed that they considered making Captain America the Soul Stone early on in the development of Avengers: Endgame.
Fans had lots of theories that involved Captain America and the Soul Stone
Even before Avengers: Infinity War came out in 2018, fans theorized that Steve Rogers was related to the Soul Stone somehow. Because Steve’s eyes appeared yellow when holding back a punch by Thanos in the movie’s trailer, fans speculated Steve could somehow be in control of the Soul Stone.
When that theory proved to be false after the movie came out, fans still theorized Steve was related to the Soul Stone in some way.
“The Soul Stone holds a special place among the infinity stones and extracts a heavy toll. It demands a sacrifice – a life for a life. In Captain America, The First Avenger, Steve Rogers sacrificed his own life to save millions. In Infinity War, Vision reminds Steve of that sacrifice, to which Steve responds, ‘we don’t trade lives’. But he did trade is life and I believe the Gauntlet resisted Thanos because Steve had sacrificed himself before. The Soul Stone was not going to be used to take his life. Thanos even looks at the Soul Stone for a brief moment while he struggles. (Sadly, the Soul Stone may also sense that Steve will most likely sacrifice his life again.),” one Reddit user theorized.
Captain America was almost the Soul Stone in ‘Avengers: Endgame’
During the virtual watch party, fans tweeted at the Russo Brothers’ Twitter account and asked questions about Avengers: Endgame.
A fan asked, “Was there any plan to include the Soul Stone place other than Vormir? Like Wakanda or even Adam Warlock himself? @ComicBook #InfinityWar #QuarantineWatchParty.”
Joe and Anthony Russo answered, “Early on in development talks we considered making Cap the soul stone… But that idea fell away rather quickly. #AvengersAssemble.”
In the replies of the Russo Brothers’ answer, some fans were impressed their theory almost came true.
“Wait so people somewhat right during the infinity war trailer ?! That would’ve been wild lol,” a Twitter user wrote.
“I F***ING KNEW IT,” a fan replied.
“ME TOO, WE WERE THIS CLOSE TO BEING PROPHETS,” another fan tweeted.
This was the Russo Brothers’ favorite scene in ‘Avengers: Endgame’
Joe and Anthony Russo used the watch party hosted by ComicBook.com to share some of their personal opinions about the movie. The directors revealed that the scene where Steve accidentally stumbles into Peggy Carter’s office at the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters was “touching” to shoot.
“This was definitely one of the more touching scenes to shoot. @ChrisEvans’s performance in Peggy’s office is… #AvengersAssemble,” they tweeted.
The Russo Brothers also told fans that the ending scene with Steve and Peggy reunited is their favorite shot from the movie.
“That long crane shot to find Cap and Peggy in the window… our favorite shot in the movie. #AvengersAssemble,” the directors tweeted.
