Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed strong criticism towards Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
George urged the governor to put an end to the mistreatment of traders by government agents and security forces in Lagos.
In an open letter addressed to the governor, he emphasized that traders in Lagos are not criminals. While Lagos holds the reputation as the Center of Excellence, George highlighted that many traders do not receive fair treatment from certain security personnel and officials daily.
It’s important to note that due to the environmental regulations prohibiting street trading, KAI officials frequently apprehend traders who sell their goods on the streets or in traffic.
“In addition to the numerous levies they pay to local councils and the severe extortion they face from some individuals, traders are also subjected to unjust treatment and humiliation,” George commented.
The PDP leader pointed out that street trading is a long-standing aspect of Lagos’ culture and has historically supported the education of many professionals, including lawyers, doctors, and engineers, through their family’s efforts in trade.
He referenced cities like London and New York where street trading is accepted and regulated.
In his letter, George mentioned that many traders are forced to work on the streets, paying daily fees to government officials due to the difficult economic circumstances, as they cannot afford to rent shops costing upwards of N1 million.
“In those advanced cities, authorities regulate street trading rather than treating traders poorly,” he stated.
“It is cruel for government officials in the 21st century to regard street traders as criminals and terrorists in Lagos State.”
“Where is our sense of dignity? Why are traders subjected to such harsh treatment every day?”
“They are not armed robbers and should not be treated as such. It’s wrong to view street traders as threats; they are simply trying to make a living, just like in many other places,” he concluded.
