Tragic Loss in Borno State Attack

Recently, Boko Haram has intensified its assaults in Borno State, leading to the death of a Nigerian Army Captain during a confrontation.

The incident took place in the Izge area of Gwoza Local Government, as confirmed by military sources. Additionally, a soldier lost his life in the attack.

The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, reported that the attackers struck at around 1 a.m. and engaged the armed forces.
“Indeed, the people in Izge experienced a Boko Haram attack at 1 a.m. Sadly, a Captain and a Soldier sacrificed their lives,” he mentioned.

He further stated, “However, our brave troops, alongside the Civilian JTF, hunters, vigilantes, and determined community members, managed to eliminate three terrorists. The attackers fled, leaving behind their weapons and over ten motorcycles, and they are currently being pursued by our security forces.”
“May Allah (SWT) grant peace to the departed souls. Our heroes continue to risk their lives for peace in the community,” he added.

Various terrorist activities have long plagued Nigerian states, with a report from SBM Intelligence indicating that at least 2,000 fatalities occurred in the first quarter of 2025, covering January to March. During this time, 136 security personnel also died.

Borno State was hit hardest, recording 515 deaths, followed by Zamfara with 408. Other states like Katsina saw 155, Benue 101, Niger 68, Anambra 63, Edo 60, Ondo 59, and Kaduna 58 casualties.

The detailed statistics revealed that 892 civilians, 462 bandits, 119 vigilantes, 234 Boko Haram members, 42 kidnappers, and 66 cultists lost their lives during this period.

In light of the escalating insecurity, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum expressed concerns. He emphasized the need for the Nigerian Army to balance aggressive measures with non-violent strategies.
“In the past three years, Borno has welcomed over 300,000 repentant Boko Haram members, and not all are combatants. Many are farmers,” he highlighted.
