BREAKING NEWS: Eleven Petitions Filed with Kwara State Election Tribunal

The Election Petitions Tribunal responsible for hearing cases related to the Governorship, National, and State Assemblies election in Kwara state has received eleven petitions from contestants who took part in the 2023 general elections. Eight of these petitions were filed by those who ran for the State House of Assembly, while three were initially filed for the House of Representatives election. However, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Muhammed Ibrahim Ajia, for Ilorin West/Asa Federal constituency withdrew his petition, reducing the number to two. Additionally, the only Senatorial petitioner, Kayode Ayelabegan of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, for Kwara Central, is reported to have withdrawn his petition as well. He was defeated by the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Muktar Shagaya. Another candidate of the NNPP, Ope Saraki, who contested the Asa/Ilorin West House of Representatives seat also confirmed that he had withdrawn his petition. Secretary of the election tribunal, Mrs Aishat Fika, stated on Friday that no date has been set for commencement of work yet. She said: “although the stage is set, no date has been fixed for hearing of the petitions filed before the election tribunal yet.”
