An illicit drug trafficking operation has been revealed, involving cocaine concealed within traditional Nigerian clothing items, such as the caps (‘fila’) and headgears (‘gele’) typically worn during ‘aso-ebi’ ceremonies, according to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The information was disclosed by NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, through his official X account on Sunday.
Babafemi reported that agents stationed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos intercepted a shipment where cocaine was hidden inside “aso ebi” attire, specifically the fila and gele, meant to be sent to Europe.
He posted pictures and a video of the confiscated items and cautioned Nigerians to be vigilant when they are asked to carry clothing items internationally for others.
“If anyone asks you to carry any aso-ebi fila or gele (traditional male cap and female headgear) to Europe or elsewhere in your luggage, the recent seizure of cocaine found in such items by #ndlea_nigeria should make you reconsider,” Babafemi remarked.
This recent seizure adds to a series of discoveries made by the agency, including an oil tanker that was modified to include a hidden compartment for smuggling drugs across the country.
