Inibehe Effiong, a Nigerian human rights attorney, has raised serious concerns regarding the increasing incidents of police harassment, torture, and arbitrary arrests targeting citizens in southern Nigeria, with suggestions that these actions are primarily for the purpose of extorting money.
On Saturday, Effiong expressed his worries on his X account, highlighting the extensive level of corruption among law enforcement in the southern regions. He underscored that a nation permitting its police to abuse, kill, and extort its people is nearing a state of disintegration.
SaharaReporters earlier revealed that the Nigerian Police Force has advised the public to remain vigilant against individuals falsely claiming ties to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, or other high-ranking officials.
The police indicated that some individuals are improperly using the IGP’s name to carry out unlawful schemes, such as extortion and intimidation.
They noted that these imposters purport to possess the IGP’s endorsement for their illicit operations, a behavior described as both alarming and unprofessional.
This warning was issued through a public announcement by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, entitled: “Misuse of the Name and Office of the Inspector-General of Police.”
Expressing dismay at the situation, Effiong shared that he has received nearly ten reports within the last two days from various Nigerians concerning the arbitrary harassment, torture, and detention by the police.
He remarked, “In the past 48 hours, I’ve gathered nearly 10 reports from different Nigerians about unjust harassment and torture by law enforcement.”
“It appears the police are illegally seeking funds ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.”
“Interestingly, none of these grievances have originated from the Northern States. The complaints predominantly come from the South-West, South-South, and South-East regions.”
“A society that permits its police force to consistently abuse, kill, and extort its citizens is dangerously close to a breaking point.”
