Court Restrains Governor Aliyu From Sacking Sokoto Monarchs

Legal Action Halts Governor Aliyu’s Removal of Sokoto Monarchs

A High Court in Sokoto, presided over by Justice Kabiru Ibrahim Ahmed, has intervened and directed Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the State’s Attorney General, and the Sokoto Sultanate Council to maintain the status quo. This direction is pending the resolution of a legal challenge brought before the court by complainants represented by Prof Ibrahim Abdullahi SAN. The complainants seek to prevent the removal of two out of the 15 traditional rulers who were earlier dismissed by the state government.

High Court restrains Sokoto Governor Aliyu from removing traditional rulers. The court granted requests for injunctions made by Alhaji Buhari Dahiru Tambuwal and Alhaji Abubakar Kassim, who serve as District Heads of Tambuwal and Kebbe, respectively. These two individuals were part of the group of 15 traditional rulers initially removed by the government of Sokoto State on allegations of insubordination and contributing to insecurity within the state.

Justice Kabiru Ibrahim Ahmed, in his ruling, instructed Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the State’s Attorney General, and the Sokoto Sultanate Council to uphold the existing situation until a final decision is made regarding the complaints lodged by the two individuals presented by Prof Ibrahim Abdullahi SAN.

Through two separate orders, Justice Ahmed mandated the defendants and all related parties to refrain from taking any further actions related to the removal or dethronement of District Heads in Sokoto State, specifically those of Kebbe and Tambuwal. This directive is to be upheld until the court hears and concludes on the motion for an interim injunction submitted by the two complainants.
