Tragic Attack in Anambra: Seven Lives Lost

In a tragic event, seven individuals, including two civilians and five members of the security forces, were brutally killed by unidentified gunmen in Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.

This tragic occurrence took place on the early morning of December 30, 2024. Reports indicate that the assailants disrupted a burial preparation gathering and opened fire, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Speculation points to a possible connection between the shooting and threats issued by the gunmen, asserting that no burial should take place without their consent.

According to a witness, “Family members were arranging a burial ceremony for a loved one set for January 2, 2025. While they were in the midst of preparations, gunmen stormed the area and opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire with nearby security personnel. The attackers also targeted police officers stationed at a post near the locality, which unfortunately resulted in the deaths of civilians and security members who were in the vicinity.”

On Monday night, the police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the harrowing details of the attack:

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has initiated a swift search for the perpetrators who attacked security personnel and innocent civilians in Ihiala around 11:20 AM on December 30, 2024,” the statement disclosed.

“This tragic incident has claimed the lives of seven individuals, including two innocent bystanders. Fortunately, a victim was rescued by the Joint Security Team and is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.”

“During a visit to assess the situation, the CP spoke with witnesses to gather more information.”

“Reports indicate that the gunmen began firing at a funeral preparation site for an event scheduled for January 2, 2025.”

“Additionally, while fleeing the scene, the attackers shot at two security officers stationed near the Local Government Headquarters along the expressway.”

“The CP extends his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the community of Ihiala during this difficult time. He also assured the public that those responsible for this heinous act will be pursued relentlessly.”
