Former US President Donald Trump is facing more than 30 counts of business fraud in an indictment from a Manhattan grand jury, according to two sources familiar with the case. This is the first time in American history that a current or former president has been charged with criminal offenses. Trump is expected to appear in court next Tuesday, April 4. The indictment has been filed under seal and the charges have not been made public yet.
The investigation is related to Trump’s alleged role in a hush money payment scheme and cover-up involving adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election. A source familiar with the case said a witness gave around 30 minutes of testimony before the grand jury voted to indict Trump.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office said it has been in contact with Trump’s lawyers and has requested that he surrender for arraignment on the Supreme Court indictment. Trump released a statement claiming it was “Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history” and that he believes it will backfire on Joe Biden. He also said that his movement and party will defeat Alvin Bragg and Joe Biden, and will throw all the “Crooked Democrats” out of office in order to “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
