In a move following the defection of 17 out of 18 acting council chairpersons from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) three months ago, Governor Monday Okpebholo has gifted them brand new SUVs.

These 17 chairpersons, allegedly supported by the APC administration, removed their elected council chairmen and their deputies.

The State House of Assembly imposed a two-month suspension on all 18 local government chairmen and their deputies on December 17, 2024, due to accusations of insubordination and severe misconduct.

This suspension was initiated by a petition submitted by Governor Okpebholo on November 16, 2024.

The petition was titled ‘Insubordination and Gross Misconduct by the 18 Local Government Chairmen for Failing to Provide Financial Records for Inspection’.

Before the suspension period concluded, the legislative members moved to impeach the council chairmen and their deputies, appointing the legislative leaders as their replacements.

After their shift to APC on March 17, 2025, they have now been rewarded with new vehicles from the Governor three months later.

Okpebholo expressed that the newly acquired SUVs were intended to facilitate efficient service delivery.

“I am grateful for this moment as these chairpersons now have the honor of driving state-issued vehicles. New developments are emerging in Edo State with the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he stated.

“Edo is poised for greater progress as we strive to match the growth of Lagos, Abuja, and other states. These vehicles are not for personal use but are meant to serve the community. I will ensure that you fulfill your responsibilities appropriately.”

“I am aware of your financial allocations, and we will evaluate whether your performance aligns with your resources. My administration has maintained a non-intrusive approach regarding your finances and assets,” he added.

Additionally, Lucky Eseigbe, the Commissioner for Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, mentioned that this was the first instance in the state’s history where new SUVs were procured for local government chairpersons.

Eseigbe emphasized that the new vehicles would empower local government chairpersons in fulfilling their duties.

Notably, Tom Obaseki, the elected chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, along with his deputy, were not impeached during this process.

Nonetheless, the oversight of the council’s operations is currently managed by Dr. Igbinigie Osaheni, the Head of Local Government Administration.
