Federal Government Takes Over Nok University
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially transferred the assets and properties of Nok University, located in Kachia, Kaduna State, to the Federal Government.
At a ceremony in Abuja, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukayode presented the university’s documents to the Minister of Education, with Vice President Kashim Shettima in attendance. This transfer is the result of a Federal High Court decision in June 2024 that mandated the forfeiture of the institution, which had been privately owned.
In response to the court’s ruling, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instructed the government to convert Nok University into a Federal University of Applied Sciences. This initiative aims to enhance development in Southern Kaduna, an area that has experienced challenges due to security issues.
During the ceremony, Vice President Shettima highlighted the handover as a testament to the government’s dedication to inclusivity and national development. He commended President Tinubu for prioritizing the university’s transformation, marking it as a significant agenda for the Federal Executive Council.
Shettima also expressed gratitude towards various contributors, including General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Justice Kumai Bayang Akaahs, and Senator Sunday Marshall, for facilitating the university’s transition. Preparations are already in progress for the university’s operations, with plans to enroll the first cohort of students by September 2025.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani thanked President Tinubu, noting that the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences is a landmark achievement for both Kaduna residents and the nation. He reiterated his administration’s focus on promoting inclusivity and harmony in the region.
EFCC Chairman Olukayode stated that the assets transferred include academic facilities, a water bottling plant, an international hotel, and an events center. This handover follows the Federal Executive Council’s resolution from February 4, 2025, which formalizes the university’s transition to federal oversight.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa commended the new university as a sign of the administration’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s human capital development, emphasizing that education, health, and social services continue to be central to President Tinubu’s goals for national progress.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa described this development as a crucial step for Southern Kaduna, highlighting the President’s dedication to the region. He affirmed that the university will not only benefit Kaduna but will also enhance educational opportunities across Nigeria and support long-term peace initiatives in the area.
