Governor Urges Youth Engagement in Politics
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has emphasized the importance of political involvement among the youth.
He highlighted that the presence of poor leadership in Nigeria will persist if young people continue to distance themselves from politics.
Speaking during the third convocation ceremony at Precious Cornerstone University in Ibadan, he expressed the necessity for more ethically-driven individuals to participate in governance.
Addressing the theme “Faith, Leadership and Governance: Preparing the Next Generation for Ethical Leadership in Nigeria,” he pointed out that a lack of ethical participation would result in continued unethical governance.
Encouraging the graduates, he urged them to pursue knowledge of ethical leadership principles.
He remarked, “Many of you may hesitate to engage in politics to preserve your integrity.”
“However, if virtuous individuals avoid governance, unethical leaders will only rise. Nature abhors a vacuum, so if good people do not step in, the unethical will dominate.”
“It is important to determine the kind of leader you aspire to be by observing and emulating quality examples around you. Surround yourselves with capable individuals and heed their advice; listening is vital.”
“True ethical leaders understand the essence of leadership as accountability to the community, which is a priority in Oyo State.”
