Enugu State Authorities Pledge Legal Action Against Man for Severely Injuring Wife

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, represents the State Government, emphasizing that the individual responsible for the crime will face severe legal repercussions.

The Enugu State Government has expressed outrage over the brutal assault on Mrs. Chinonso Echegi by her husband, Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi.

This violent act occurred due to a disagreement in Ibagwa Ani, located in Nsukka Local Government Area, resulting in Echegi severing his wife’s hand.

Mrs. Echegi is currently receiving medical care at the Enugu State Teaching Hospital, while her husband has been apprehended.

Commissioner Ngozi Enih visited the victim and highlighted the pressing need to combat gender-based violence (GBV).

“It is heartbreaking to report the tragic situation of Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, whose hand was brutally severed by her husband, Mr. Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi. She is fighting for her life after being referred from Keoetochukwu Hospital Nsukka to Enugu State Teaching Hospital for advanced medical treatment,” Enih remarked.

“This abhorrent act not only affects one individual but serves as a distressing reminder of the critical need to eradicate gender-based violence (GBV) in our society. Violence against women and girls, in any form, is intolerable and will face strict judgement in Enugu State.

“The Enugu State Government is taking immediate and firm measures to ensure that Mr. Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi, the perpetrator of this dreadful act, is held accountable.

“My office, in collaboration with relevant organizations, is working diligently to ensure that Mrs. Chinonso Echegi receives comprehensive support while ensuring the perpetrator faces the full extent of the law.

“Let this act be a serious warning to anyone contemplating violence against women. Enugu State has a strict no-tolerance policy for gender-based violence, femicide, and any form of abuse. We are firmly dedicated to safeguarding the rights, security, and dignity of every woman in our region.

“Gender-based violence transcends personal issues—it is a societal concern impacting everyone. It disrupts families, devastates lives, and hinders progress. We must unite to raise awareness, support victims, and ensure that offenders are punished.

“I urge all community members, leaders, and stakeholders to take a firm stand against GBV. Let us work towards a society where women and girls can thrive without fear, their voices respected, and their rights protected.

“To anyone considering such violent actions, be warned: Enugu State will take action. Justice will prevail, and there will be serious consequences for your actions.

“Together, we can eliminate GBV and foster a safer, more just society. Let us work collaboratively to achieve this vision.”
