Several members of the criminal group managed to escape, sustaining injuries from gunfire, as indicated by a report from the Delta State Police Command, issued by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe.

A 34-year-old man, Benson Oghenevwaire, suspected of kidnapping and robbery, has been shot dead.

His death occurred during a confrontation with a Police surveillance unit from the Ovwian/Aladja Division in the Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to the Delta State Police Command’s statement, other gang members fled the scene with gunshot wounds.

The report detailed that, “On September 27, 2024, at approximately 5:00 PM, information was received regarding a notorious kidnapper causing chaos in Udu LGA, Warri, and nearby areas. This individual was part of a gang involved in multiple robberies and kidnappings, including a theft at Wetland Microfinance Bank on February 26, 2021, and the killing of Prince Eric Takerere, the son of the Urhowhrun Monarch, along with two police escorts on April 3, 2021, at Efurrun Sapele Road.

The Division Police Officer, CSP Bulus Musa, led his team to the suspect’s hideout in Orereokpe, Okpe LGA, where they encountered Oghenevwaire and his accomplices in a violent gun battle.

“The police gained the upper hand, with many suspects wounded and fleeing, while Benson Oghenevwaire was captured but sustained serious injuries.

“He was transported to Warri Central Hospital for treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries. During this operation, authorities recovered one Beretta pistol and two rounds of live ammunition.

“A thorough manhunt for the remaining gang members who fled is currently in progress.”
