The Tinubu administration has established an independent panel to investigate serious allegations of corruption and misconduct within the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).
The committee was launched by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday, September 30, in Abuja.
During the event, the Minister emphasized the committee’s duty to examine claims that certain correctional officers permitted Bobrisky to stay in an unauthorized location while serving his sentence.
Tunji-Ojo expressed the importance of a comprehensive examination to uncover the investigated issues, utilizing thorough research and data analysis to provide sustainable solutions to existing problems.
“We aim to reform the correctional system. Your main task is to explore specific accusations of misconduct, including corruption and mistreatment of inmates by officers, particularly the recent allegation involving Bobrisky, for which I expect findings within two weeks,” he stated.
Led by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, the Minister instructed the committee to perform their work impartially, without favoritism toward any individual or group.
“We will depend on your legal expertise to ensure our actions comply with the law. You are expected to recommend pathways forward and bring forth facts for public awareness. It is essential to clarify that no one will receive protection, regardless of their status,”
The Minister also urged the committee to propose both immediate and long-term strategies to address ongoing issues within the service, focusing on systemic problems that contribute to violations and recommending actionable reforms.
The committee includes members such as Mrs. Omotese Eva, Director of Legal; Nasir Usman, Director of Joint Services; Dr. Uju Agomoh, President of the Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), and former Board Member of the International Corrections and Prisons Association; and Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugo, a Human Rights Radio consultant with extensive experience in corporate leadership, forensic research, and social impact.
