Last Thursday, a gang of kidnappers operating at Uga-Ezinifite road in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, reportedly escaped with their victim after their car ran into a ditch, Daily Post reports.
The alleged kidnappers also dumped their operational vehicle, a Mercedes Benz GLK Sports Utility Vehicle, leaving behind pump action guns and blood-stained clothes.
Spokesperson for Anambra State Police Command, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who disclosed this in a press release, said the kidnappers were spotted by police operatives driving at a high speed at about 8:30 pm on Thursday.
Ikenga’s press release read: “On Thursday, 3rd August 2023, at about 8:30 pm, a detachment of police at Aguata, while on patrol along Uga-Ezinifite Expressway, saw an SUV drive past at a terrible speed.
“The operatives suspected that they may be kidnappers with an abducted victim, and the team went in pursuit.
“Several kilometres away, the team found the vehicle in a ditch but without any occupant.
“They found clothing with blood stains in the vehicle, as well as two pump action rifles and a machete.
“The vehicle, a wine-colored Mercedes GLK 350 4matic with Registration No. Enugu ENU 484 JV was recovered and deposited for safekeeping at Area Command Headquarters in Uga.”
Ikenga stated that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has commended the joint security team for their vigilance and also ordered a full-scale investigation to locate the owner of the vehicle and ascertain circumstances leading to the recovery of arms and offensive weapons from the fleeing hoodlums.
The CP also enjoined people in the neighbourhood not to harbour criminals but to turn them over to law enforcement in the interest of community safety.
