October 1 Protest in Kano Cancelled
The anticipated protest on October 1st in Kano did not take place.
This demonstration was organized by the Nigerian Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM) and was intended to address the ongoing difficulties faced by Nigerians. However, according to reports from Punch, the event was thwarted due to the arrest of five NPFM officials.
Last week, these officials had pledged to hold a peaceful protest to voice their concerns over current issues affecting citizens.
Nevertheless, due to the police crackdown on the NPFM leadership, the planned protest was abandoned.
In light of the expected gathering, many individuals opted to stay home, leading to numerous shops and market stalls remaining closed.
Armed security was visibly present in numerous key locations to maintain order and prevent disturbances in the historic city.
Only a handful of vehicles were spotted on the main roads, indicating a subdued atmosphere.
Some residents shared with PUNCH Online that the temporary shutdown of businesses was influenced by past experiences where protests against bad governance spiraled into chaos, resulting in the vandalism of both public and private properties.
“People have learned from the previous EndBadGovernance protests, which is why many chose to remain indoors this time to avoid unexpected troubles,” one local remarked.
