Bank Employee Arrested for Alleged N18 Million Theft

The Katsina State Police have taken a 28-year-old bank employee, Adewumi Bolaji Gabriel, into custody for supposedly stealing N18 million from a customer using an ATM.

Gabriel, who worked as an Assistant Operations Officer at a newly established bank, allegedly collaborated with a partner, David Mesioye, in committing the crime.

ASP Abubakar Aliyu, the police spokesperson, announced the arrest during a press conference at the Katsina Police Headquarters on December 4, 2024.

The police action followed a complaint lodged by a victim named Okojie Herbert, who reported the incident to law enforcement.

“After a complaint from Okojie Hubert Erayomon, an Assistant Head of Operations at the Bank Daura Branch, regarding a suspected fraud case against Adewumi Bolaji Gabriel, the Police initiated an investigation,” the Public Relations Officer elaborated.

“The suspect worked with a friend, David Mesioye, who is an employee at the Kafur Branch, currently evading capture, to steal ₦18,164,000 from a customer’s account.”

According to the investigation, Gabriel, who oversaw ATM operations, utilized his knowledge of bank procedures to facilitate the theft, which came to light during a routine audit.

“During the investigation, the suspect admitted to his involvement in the crime, leading to the recovery of various items, including N10,180,000 from his bank accounts and physical cash amounting to N366,900, among other possessions.”

“Upon concluding the investigation, the suspect will face charges in court.”
