The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Agbo Gilbert Major, has formally distanced the party from the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

In a recent interview, Major stated that Kwankwaso has not been affiliated with the party since 2023.

He made these comments during his appearance on Trust TV’s Daily Politics.

Major emphasized that NNPP no longer recognizes Kwankwaso as a member.

“It’s important to focus on more significant matters rather than discuss Kwankwaso personally. He’s now part of NNPP’s past. He joined at one point but then departed along with the Kwankwasiyya Movement. I prefer not to delve into his situation,” he noted.

Major reiterated that, per the party’s constitution and various court decisions, including those from Abia High Court and FCT High Court, Kwankwaso is no longer a member.

During his remarks on the wave of defections affecting major opposition parties, including NNPP, Major commented, “If you examine the backgrounds of those who have left, you’ll find they were once key players in the Kwankwasiyya Movement, significantly contributing to NNPP’s success in Kano.”

“They have unfortunately lost essential members—skilled politicians whose decisions could impact many. That’s the reality we’re facing.”

He pointed out that individuals who defected from NNPP were dissatisfied with the management of the Kwankwasiyya Movement but had no issues with the NNPP itself.

When questioned about his concerns regarding Kwankwaso’s ties to the presidency, Major replied, “Consider my position. Would you feel anxious about someone who hasn’t been part of your party for over a year joining another one? Why should that be a concern? Let’s focus on more pressing issues.”

“He’s moved on. As I’ve said, he’s part of our party’s history. He came and left. I wish to concentrate on matters that will strengthen our operational effectiveness.”

“I can assure you that he is free to pursue any path he chooses because we are no longer connected. He has not been with us since June 2023.”
