Police Officers Arrested After Student’s Death
The Kwara State Police have detained multiple officers suspected in the death of Suleiman Olayinka, a 27-year-old student from Kwara State University (KWASU).
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday around 2:00 PM in Ilorin’s Tanke area, where Olayinka was allegedly confronted by three policemen immediately after he dismounted from a motorcycle.
Witnesses recounted that Olayinka was fetching N1,000 he had sent to a point-of-sale operator to cover his motorcycle fare. One eyewitness stated, “He had just received the funds when the officers approached from a tricycle and forced him to the ground, despite his pleas for clarity on his supposed wrongdoing.”
He further added that Olayinka disclosed his asthma condition to the officers, who disregarded his urgent requests for leniency.
DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, the police spokesperson, confirmed the situation on Friday, stating that they are actively addressing the case.
“The Kwara State Police Command acknowledges this tragic occurrence that led to the untimely passing of Suleiman Olayinka (M), aged 27,” the spokesperson noted.
“A report regarding cheating and potential criminal breach of trust had been made concerning the deceased. Consequently, detectives were assigned for an investigation.”
“The officers implicated in this case have been identified, arrested, and are undergoing further investigation related to this incident.
“We will provide timely updates as our investigation progresses.”
This incident follows closely on the heels of the recent dismissal and prosecution of three police officers connected to the murder of another student from Kwara Polytechnic, Quoyum Abdulyekeen, just weeks prior.
