The Prime Minister of Mali, Choguel Kokalla Maïga, has been dismissed by the military authorities of the country.

This decision comes in the wake of Maïga’s public opposition to the military leadership.

The announcement was made by Alfousseyni Diawara, the Secretary General of the presidential office, on Wednesday.

He stated that “the prime minister and the government members are no longer in their positions.”

This change follows Maïga’s comments during a rally in Bamako where he criticized the junta for postponing the transition to civilian rule that was supposed to start on March 26.

He further expressed disappointment about the lack of discussions surrounding this issue, noting that he has been depending on news media for information.

While Assimi Goïta, the military leader, had earlier announced elections for February, those plans have faced delays “due to technical reasons,” with no new schedule released.

Goïta was a key figure in the uprising that toppled the previous government in 2020 and later took on the role of interim president after a subsequent coup in 2021.

He had proposed a 24-month plan beginning in March 2022 aimed at reestablishing civilian governance.

Currently, there has been no information regarding Maïga’s successor as prime minister.
